Dear Parents and Community Members:

The state of Washington has made drastic cuts in the education budget.

Many schools are faced with making very difficult decisions regarding cuts for the 2009-2011 school years.  The Oakville School District is also trying to find ways to reduce costs, as well as, maintain educational programs for our students.

Currently, our elementary building is not cost effective to use for classrooms.  We house Kindergarten and the Host programs in this building.  Therefore, both programs will be placed in the intermediate building.  We have four rooms in that facility which will make a cohesive primary K-3 and Host program.

Due to security and cost concerns, elementary and high school offices will be combined for all grades K-12 and located in the current sixth grade classroom by the middle school gym.  Both elementary and secondary secretaries will be able to assist all students, staff, parents and community members by using one main entrance off of the middle school parking lot.

Our high school building offices will become the "Student Support Center".  This area will be staffed by current staff employees, assisting students with their educational and social needs.  Our sixth, seventh and eighth grades, will be housed as a middle school program, in the current middle school rooms, located to the right of the middle school gym. Staffing and scheduling for the middle school program is in process.

We are currently looking at all high school offerings and scheduling issues for the next school year.  We are basing our schedule on the needs of our students.  We are in the process of reviewing the student handbook and will have one handbook for grades K-5 and one for grades 6-12 in the coming school year.

The Oakville School District will cut costs by reducing the Superintendents salary, on a voluntary basis, and increasing the job duties to Superintendent/Principal K-12.  This will eliminate the current 4-12 Principal position.  Remaining staff will assume other duties as needed to offset this loss. The Superintendent/ Principal office will move to the library office rooms.   Our current approximate reduction is anticipated to be $200,000.

We have had to make some very difficult decisions, but feel that by reducing costs now, we will be able to rebuild in the future.

Our next school board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 5:30 in the school library.  Please join us!

Sincerely,

Kathy Lorton, Superintendent
