Meeting the Math Graduation Requirement
Although Washington students in the classes of 2009-2012 don’t need to pass the math WASL to be
eligible for a diploma, they must fulfill a state math graduation requirement in order to graduate. To
meet the state assessment graduation requirement, students must pass the reading and writing tests on
the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), or a legislatively approved alternative, and
fulfill the math requirement, which was amended by the state Legislature in March 2009.
How do students meet the math graduation requirement.
Students must either pass the high school math WASL (or a legislatively approved alternative) OR earn
two math credits after 10
th
grade. Students who earn two math credits after 10
th
grade are no longer
required to take an annual math assessment. They must still take the math
WASL once before using any of the approved alternatives (see below).
Let’s start with the basics for how students in the classes of 2009-2012 can
meet the state math graduation requirement. Below are the three options,
in order, students can use to fulfill the math requirement. Students can only
access options 2 and 3 after they’ve taken the math WASL once.
Pass the high school math WASL/WAAS (Washington Alternate
Assessment System)
Meet standard on a math collection of evidence OR meet standard on the math ACT,
math SAT or calculus or statistics Advanced Placement course exams
(Note: Students can
also meet the standard through a WASL-grades comparison, but that is not a math assessment. Students
must have a 3.2 or above GPA to qualify for the grades comparison.)
Earn two math credits after 10
th
grade
The state Legislature amended the math graduation requirement law in March 2009 to eliminate the
requirement for students to take an annual math assessment who are earning two math credits after 10
th
grade. Students who do not pass the math WASL in 10
th
grade, however, are encouraged to try to pass a
math assessment in 11
th
grade to free up their schedule during their final year in high school to take a
class of their choice.
