Superintendents Letter 12/16/2011

December 16, 2011

To Our Community Members:

The Oakville School District received Notification of Identified Persistently Lowest-Achieving High School from OSPI.  What does that mean for our high school?

Background:

Senate Bill 6696 became law in 2010, requiring the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to annually identify low achieving schools in the state.  This is based on the past three years of achievement data in reading and mathematics combined.  The Oakville High School grades 7-12 are a Tier 11- Achievement school.

Oakville Tier 11 Data:

The data includes grades 7-12 with an enrollment of 134 students.  Our poverty rate is 77.24% and we are in step 5 of improvement.   Our three year reading and math combined proficiency is 27.7%.  Our three year improvement rate is 2.98%.  This improvement trend is better than that of the state.

Why is our rate improving?

The Oakville School District applied for and received school improvement grants to hire a school counselor, vice principal, and literacy coach.  The entire staff participates in professional development around literacy and mathematics.  Staff in grades K-12 participates in weekly PLC (professional learning communities).  The district also participates in bi-weekly Leadership Team meetings.  Our school board members and staff are dedicated to continue to show progress in combined reading and mathematic scores.

Sincerely,

Kathy Lorton

Superintendent

To Our Community Members,

The Timberland Regional Library is working on plans to build a new library in the existing elementary building.  This project would completely redesign the elementary classrooms, kitchen and cafeteria buildings.  Half of the classrooms would be remodeled into a library and the other half of would be classrooms.  Our kitchen would be upgraded and a new metal roof would be added.   Funding for this project would come from various grants and private donations.

Our current classrooms are not being used, so this would be an ideal location for a library.  The kitchen and cafeteria would be remodeled to also serve as a community center and an emergency shelter.  This would be an added benefit to all of our community members.   The library would be open for general public use and for students to access during the day.  Students would have access to much more information, computers, and skilled library staff.  The new library would be the first in the libraries five county district to have a joint agreement with a school.

Michael Crose, Library Director, and Larry Smith of Todd and Associates, have met with our school board and OSPI, Office of Public Instruction school facilities regional coordinator, and director to present this proposal.  Our board and OSPI are very enthusiastic about the possibilities of having a Timberland Library located in the school.

Sincerely,

Kathy Lorton

Superintendent
